It’s the second time I visit Tenerife. Yay! It has been exactly one year since I was there with my friends. This time, I am traveling with my boyfriend and guess what? We are going to surf!
Apparently Playa de Las Américas, the south of Tenerife, has great beginner surf spots. And because Tenerife is located next to Africa, it is 20 degrees Celsius right now. Besides that, winter in Tenerife is the best time of the year to surf. Perfect to fuel our batteries for the next cold winter months in Belgium.
Surf spots in Tenerife
Playa de las Américas has 4 surf spots: the Spanish Left (or La Izquierda), La Derecha, El Conquistador and El Dedo. The Spanish Left is the best and safest one if you want to learn how to surf, because of the rocky bottom. There are no pointy rocks in the water, what the other spots do have. We rented our boards at Franz Surf School, which is in front of the Spanish Left. You can rent a wetsuit and boots as well or book some surf lessons. To rent a board for a whole day it wil cost €15. The apartment we rented with Airbnb is a 10 minute walk from Franz and the Spanish Left. It is also located in the middle of the city center. Very convenient if you don’t like to be lugging around like us.
If you are done surfing after a whole day, Playa de Las Américas offers enough bars, pubs and beach clubs to order your well deserved cocktail. And if you have some energy left after that, you can go to Papagayo, a fancy beach club. For the love birds among us where one of the two doesn’t like to surf, there are shops enough to spend your time. There is a street with all the big brands like Zara and Mango.
After 4 days, it is time for us to leave Tenerife already. One thing is sure: with an overdose of sun and waves, where good to go the next grey months ahead with a smile!
